Rivermap EN Thompson River (Fraser River)
The Thompson River, largest tributary of the Fraser River, forms at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers in Kamloops in south-central British Columbia and winds through varied terrain of forested valleys, open grasslands and steep sun-baked canyons with basalt cliffs and sagebrush until it meets the Fraser at Lytton. In this dry rain-shadow region, ponderosa pines and broad plateaus define the landscape, while the river flows calmly through Kamloops Lake before surging powerfully through narrow gorges. Recreational pursuits center on the water itself: thrilling whitewater rafting and kayaking on renowned rapids, outstanding fishing for steelhead, salmon and trout, plus camping and hiking along the shores in scenic parks that showcase the striking contrast between desert-like surroundings and the vibrant river.
