Middle Fork Payette River

The Middle Fork Payette River winds roughly forty-eight miles through the rugged mountains and forested canyons of Idaho’s Boise National Forest in Boise and Valley Counties, descending from higher granite landscapes into open meadows and willow-lined valleys before joining the South Fork near Crouch. Its clear, snowmelt-fed waters carve a scenic path past ponderosa pine and Douglas fir stands, rocky cliffs, and hidden riverside hot springs. Recreation thrives along its accessible banks and gentle-to-moderate stretches: family-friendly floating, tubing, and Class II–III rafting or kayaking on popular runs such as the section from Tie Creek toward Crouch, trout fishing in riffles and pools, riverside camping at developed and primitive sites, hiking and horseback riding on nearby trails, and ATV or motorcycle exploration of the surrounding forest roads and paths.
