Rivermap EN Vermilion River ( Lake Erie / Ohio)
The Vermilion River is a scenic waterway in northern Ohio that flows approximately 67 miles (109 km) northward from its source at the Bailey Lakes (Savannah Lakes) in Ashland County before emptying into Lake Erie at the city of Vermilion in Erie County. Its name derives from the French word for “red,” referring to the distinctive reddish clay and soil that characterize its banks and riverbed, often giving the water a muddy appearance after rainfall. The river drains a watershed of about 268 square miles across several counties and features a mix of environments, including wooded valleys, gorges, and flatter sections near its mouth. As a tributary of Lake Erie, it supports a vibrant harbor and marina area in Vermilion, known as one of the largest small-boat harbors on the Great Lakes. The river offers recreational opportunities such as fishing (notably for steelhead), boating, and nature exploration, while its lower reaches have played a historical role in shipping and local settlement since the early 19th century. Today, it remains a cherished natural and recreational asset for the surrounding communities.
