Rivermap EN Rocky River (Lake Erie / Ohio)
The Rocky River is a scenic tributary of Lake Erie in northern Ohio, primarily flowing through Cuyahoga County. Formed by the confluence of its East and West Branches in North Olmsted, the main stem stretches about 12 miles (19 km) before emptying into Lake Erie between the cities of Lakewood and Rocky River. Its longer branches originate further inland in Cuyahoga, Medina, and surrounding counties, draining a watershed of approximately 294 square miles. The river is renowned for its dramatic deep valley and steep shale cliffs, which reach up to 150 feet in height in places and are crossed by several high-level bridges. Much of the main river flows through the beautiful Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks, featuring lush floodplain forests with cottonwoods, sycamores, and willows, as well as open meadows. This protected area offers excellent opportunities for recreation, including fishing (notably for steelhead trout), kayaking, hiking, and boating near the mouth. The Rocky River and its valley represent a vital natural corridor close to the Cleveland metropolitan area, combining ecological richness with accessible green space.
