Rivermap EN Rio Chama
The Rio Chama is a majestic tributary of the Rio Grande, winding through the scenic landscapes of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Originating from the confluence of the West and East Forks in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado at an elevation of around 9,440 feet, the river flows for approximately 130 miles (210 km) before joining the Rio Grande near the San Juan Indian Reservation. Along its course, it passes through striking multi-colored sandstone canyons, with walls rising up to 1,500 feet, carved through vibrant layers of siltstone, gypsum, and sandstone. Designated as a Wild and Scenic River, it traverses wilderness areas and offers breathtaking views of towering cliffs, wooded side canyons, and diverse ecosystems. The river is popular for rafting on Class II and III rapids, trout fishing, hiking, and camping, embodying the rugged beauty and rich cultural history of the American Southwest, including ancient archaeological sites and landscapes reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings.
