Rivermap EN Rock Creek (Potomac River)
Rock Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, flows through the heart of Washington, D.C., and its surrounding areas, creating a scenic natural corridor that offers urban residents and visitors an accessible escape into nature. Originating in Maryland and winding its way southward for about 33 miles before joining the Potomac, the creek is best known for the beautiful Rock Creek Park, a large urban national park established in 1890 that spans over 1,700 acres of forests, valleys, and rocky outcrops. The area is a paradise for recreational activities. Visitors can explore more than 32 miles of hiking trails, ranging from easy paved paths to more challenging dirt trails through wooded ravines, ideal for walking, running, or nature observation. Biking is very popular along Beach Drive and multi-use trails, especially on weekends when sections are closed to car traffic, allowing cyclists to enjoy a car-free ride through lush greenery. Picnicking is a favorite pastime with numerous scenic spots equipped with tables and grills, perfect for family outings by the flowing creek. Other highlights include an 18-hole golf course with hilly terrain, a tennis center for casual play or tournaments, and horseback riding along dedicated bridle trails. Fishing is possible in designated areas (following local regulations), and while swimming in the creek itself is generally not permitted due to water quality, boating and paddling opportunities exist nearby on the Potomac River. The park also supports wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and educational programs at the nature center, making it a year-round destination for relaxation, exercise, and outdoor adventure in the nation's capital.
