Beschreibung des Flusses Adour
The Adour is a scenic river in southwestern France that rises in the central Pyrenees near the Tourmalet Pass in the High-Bigorre region at an elevation of about 2,200 meters and flows approximately 308 kilometers before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay) near Bayonne. Geologically, it drains parts of the Pyrenean orogen formed by the collision of the Iberian and European plates and traverses the Aquitaine Basin in its lower course, featuring tertiary and quaternary deposits of sand, gravel, and alluvium eroded from the mountains during the last ice ages. Historically, the river’s course has shifted significantly; until the Middle Ages, it often reached the sea near Capbreton, redirected by storms and floods, and has long served as a vital transport route and natural border between the Basque Country and the Landes region. For leisure and recreation, the Adour provides diverse opportunities amid varied landscapes of foothills, forests, and flat riverbanks. Popular activities include boat trips and river cruises departing from places like Urt and heading toward Bayonne, frequently accompanied by informative commentary on nature and local culture. Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts enjoy the calmer sections with gentle currents, while anglers frequent the banks in search of various fish species. Walkers, cyclists, and rollerbladers make use of well-maintained paths along the shores, such as those between Sames and Bayonne or near Saint-Sever, where picnic areas and scenic viewpoints invite relaxation. Near Bayonne, combined tours with the tributary Nive are possible, and the tidal stretches offer relaxed water-based activities in the midst of Basque and Landes-typical nature.
