Rivermap EN Roanoke / Staunton River
The Roanoke River, also known as the Staunton River in its upper reaches, is a major waterway in the southeastern United States. Originating in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, it flows generally southeastward for approximately 660 kilometers (410 miles) through the states of Virginia and North Carolina before emptying into Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. The river’s dual naming reflects regional traditions: “Staunton” is commonly used for the upper portion in Virginia, while “Roanoke” refers to the lower course, particularly after it crosses into North Carolina. The Roanoke River drains a large watershed of about 25,000 square kilometers and has played a significant role in the history, economy, and ecology of the region. Historically important for Native American settlements, colonial transportation, and later for hydropower and agriculture, the river today supports diverse ecosystems including riparian forests, wetlands, and important habitats for fish and wildlife. Several reservoirs and dams, such as the Smith Mountain Lake and Kerr Lake, regulate its flow and provide recreational opportunities like boating, fishing, and camping. The river is renowned for its scenic beauty, especially in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain sections, where it meanders through rolling hills, farmlands, and dense forests.
