Rivermap EN French Broad River
The French Broad River is one of the oldest rivers in North America, flowing approximately 218 miles (351 km) from the mountains of North Carolina through the scenic landscapes of eastern Tennessee before joining the Holston River in Knoxville to form the Tennessee River. Known for its rich history, diverse ecosystems, and excellent accessibility, it is a premier destination for outdoor recreation in the Appalachian region.Paddling is the most popular activity on the river. The French Broad offers everything from calm, flatwater sections ideal for beginners and relaxed family floats to exciting whitewater rapids (especially in the upper sections in North Carolina). In Tennessee, the river is part of the French Broad River Blueway, with dozens of public access points for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. The urban sections near Asheville and Knoxville are particularly popular for easy day trips with beautiful mountain and city views. Fishing is outstanding year-round: the river supports healthy populations of smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, trout (in cooler upstream areas), muskie, and catfish. Tailwaters below dams like Douglas Lake provide excellent fishing opportunities. Boating enthusiasts enjoy motorboating, waterskiing, and tubing on the wider, slower sections and the connected lakes. Additional recreational highlights include hiking and biking along riverside greenways and trails (such as the French Broad River Greenway in Asheville), birdwatching, tubing, swimming in natural areas, and picnicking at numerous river parks. The combination of urban proximity, mountain scenery, and varied water conditions makes the French Broad River a favorite for both locals and visitors seeking memorable outdoor adventures throughout the year.
