Rivermap EN Santee River
The Santee River is a major waterway in South Carolina, United States, stretching approximately 143 miles (230 km) from its formation by the confluence of the Congaree and Wateree Rivers near Fort Motte to its mouth at the Atlantic Ocean. Flowing southeastward across the coastal plain, it forms a vital part of one of the largest river systems on the East Coast. Much of its upper course is impounded by the Santee Dam, creating the expansive Lake Marion reservoir, which, together with Lake Moultrie, supports hydroelectric power generation, navigation, and recreation. The river winds through rural and forested landscapes, including cypress swamps, floodplain forests, and tidal wetlands, before splitting into the North and South Santee distributaries and emptying into Santee Bay near McClellanville. Its basin drains large portions of the Piedmont and coastal regions, providing essential habitats for diverse wildlife, including endangered species, and historically serving as an important route for transportation and settlement. Today, the Santee River remains a cornerstone of South Carolina’s natural beauty, ecology, and economy.
