Rivermap EN Suwannee River
The Suwannee River is a wild blackwater river in the southeastern United States that originates in the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia and winds approximately 246 miles (396 km) through northern Florida before emptying into the Gulf of America. Its dark, tannin-stained waters, derived from decaying vegetation in the swamps, contrast beautifully with the many clear freshwater springs that feed into it along the way. The river traverses diverse landscapes, from dense cypress forests and limestone banks with whitewater rapids like Big Shoals to wetlands and salt marshes near its mouth. As one of the last largely unspoiled major rivers in the region, it offers a paradise for paddlers, nature enthusiasts, and anglers, supporting rich biodiversity including manatees, river otters, and numerous bird species. It gained cultural fame through Stephen Foster’s song “Old Folks at Home” (commonly known as Swanee River), which made it an enduring icon of Florida.
