The Water of Assel is a scenic stream in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It rises on the slopes of Kirkland Hill and flows westward before turning south for approximately 7 km. The river then joins the Duisk River near Asselfoot and forms part of the larger River Stinchar system, which reaches the sea at Ballantrae. It winds through quiet rural valleys featuring moorland, farmland and wooded sections, offering a peaceful and natural character typical of the Carrick region.The Water of Assel and its valley are popular for outdoor leisure activities. Walkers particularly enjoy the routes along the Assel Valley, including sections of the Girvan Trails such as the Girvan to Barr Hill Trail. These paths provide beautiful views of the surrounding hills, old ruins and tranquil countryside. The area is ideal for hiking, nature observation and peaceful escapes. As part of the Stinchar catchment, the river also offers good opportunities for salmon and trout fishing in suitable seasons.
