Beschreibung des Flusses Polesski-Kanal / Полеский Калан
The Polessky Canal (Полеский канал) is a picturesque historic waterway in the Polessky District of Kaliningrad Oblast, connecting the lower Pregolya River with the Nemunas system. Running through the flat, water-rich landscape often called “Little Venice” of northern Sambia, it offers perfect conditions for relaxed, nature-oriented leisure activities. In summer the canal attracts anglers in large numbers: from the banks or small boats, roach, bream, tench, pike and zander are regularly caught – including some impressive specimens. Light match or feeder rods are popular, but spinning and fly-fishing also work very well here. The gentle current and weedy shoreline zones make the canal one of the best freshwater fisheries in the region.Beyond fishing, the banks invite long cycling trips and leisurely walks. The flat, often tree-lined landscape with numerous small bridges, locks and old willows creates a special, almost meditative atmosphere. Especially beautiful sections can be found near Matrosovo, Golovkino or around the Gremyachinsky bridge area.Kayaking, canoeing and SUP boarding are becoming increasingly popular – the calm waters are ideal for beginners and families alike. Some shoreline areas offer natural swimming spots and sandy banks perfect for picnics. During the warm months you will often see small campfires, tent sites and people simply enjoying the silence, birdsong and vast sky.The Polessky Canal is therefore the ideal place for anyone seeking quiet, nature-close leisure – whether shore fishing, relaxed paddling, cycling along the water or simply lingering in the wide, green Polessye landscape.
