Rivermap EN Hurunui River
The Hurunui River rises in the Southern Alps of North Canterbury on New Zealand’s South Island, with its north branch fed mainly by Lake Sumner and its south branch starting at Harper Pass, and flows roughly one hundred and fifty kilometres eastward through alpine valleys, tight gorges and the Culverden Basin before reaching the Pacific Ocean south of Port Robinson. With a catchment exceeding two thousand six hundred square kilometres it ranks among the region’s most diverse rivers and shifts from clear, lake- and snow-fed upper reaches to braided gravel sections and steep gorges in the middle and lower course. Upper and middle stretches invite year-round Class II and III whitewater runs, especially Maori Gully and Hawarden Gorge, for kayaking and packrafting, while the full length offers excellent brown trout and seasonal sea-run salmon fishing together with jet boating, swimming and access for walks and nature observation around Lake Sumner.
