Rivermap EN Kowhai River
The Kowhai River rises on the slopes of Manakau in the Seaward Kaikōura Range on New Zealand’s South Island and first flows south through steep alpine terrain before turning southeast across the narrow coastal plain to reach the Pacific Ocean roughly twenty-six kilometres downstream, about three kilometres west of Kaikōura. Its upper course forms a narrow rocky valley of scrub and scree that broadens into a braided gravel bed on the lower flats, helping shape the alluvial plain that once linked the Kaikōura Peninsula to the mainland. In the upper valley, challenging walking tracks and multi-day tramps follow the riverbed with repeated crossings to Kowhai Hut and onward over Kowhai Saddle into the neighbouring Hapuku valley, offering access to peaks such as Mount Fyffe and drawing experienced trampers and nature observers into the surrounding conservation park.
