Tobacco River

The Tobacco River winds through northwestern Montana near Eureka and the Canadian border. Formed at the confluence of Fortine Creek and Grave Creek, it flows roughly 18 miles through forested valleys and open plains of the Tobacco Valley before emptying into Lake Koocanusa. Its gentle currents with mild Class I and II rapids invite relaxed kayaking, tubing, and paddling, while anglers pursue trout and, in fall, spawning salmon. Flat trails and former railroad grades along the river provide excellent hiking and biking, and simple forest campsites offer direct access to nature and wildlife viewing.
