Stillwater River (Flathead River / Montana)

The Stillwater River rises in the Whitefish Range and Salish Mountains of northwestern Montana, close to the Canadian border and west of Glacier National Park, then flows southward through the Rocky Mountain Trench. It passes through a series of calm lakes including Upper and Lower Stillwater Lake, receives the Whitefish River near Kalispell, and only afterward enters the Flathead River. Its path shapes a gentle landscape of forests, wetlands, and broad valleys that often lives up to its name. Recreation centers on fishing for northern pike, trout, and whitefish, while the quieter stretches invite kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Hiking trails along the banks and through the surrounding woodlands complete the peaceful outdoor experience.
