Rivermap EN South Fork Owyhee River
The South Fork Owyhee River flows north through the remote high desert of northern Nevada into southwestern Idaho, where it empties into the Owyhee River. Carved deep into volcanic basalt and rhyolite, its steep-walled canyons plunge as much as 550 feet, revealing dramatic pinnacles, hoodoos, and layered cliffs that rise abruptly from the surrounding sagebrush plains. This isolated stretch offers one of the most pristine wilderness river experiences in the American West. From late March through early June, when snowmelt fills the channel, rafters and kayakers navigate its mostly Class II to III waters, with occasional stronger rapids, enjoying multi-day floats through profound solitude. Hikers explore side canyons and rim-to-river trails, while anglers pursue redband trout, campers find secluded beaches, and visitors watch for wildlife amid the quiet grandeur of this hidden desert oasis.
