Deschutes River (Oregon)

The Deschutes River rises in the volcanic highlands of the Cascade Range in central Oregon and winds more than 250 miles northward through dense forests, basalt canyons, and the expansive high desert before joining the Columbia River. Its course shapes varied landscapes from snow-capped peaks and clear mountain lakes to steep rock walls and arid plains. Recreational pursuits center on premier trout fishing, challenging whitewater rafting and kayaking, extensive hiking and mountain biking along the banks, as well as camping and relaxed floating on calmer stretches.
