Rivermap EN Nueces River
The Nueces River is a significant waterway in southern Texas, flowing approximately 315 miles (507 km) from its headwaters on the Edwards Plateau to the Gulf of Mexico. It rises from spring-fed sources in Edwards and Real counties, where its clear, limestone-bottomed waters carve through scenic canyons and rugged terrain before descending through the Balcones Escarpment. The river then meanders southeastward across the coastal plains, draining a vast basin of about 16,800 square miles. Named "River of Nuts" (Río de las Nueces) by Spanish explorers due to the abundant pecan trees along its banks, it supports diverse ecosystems, from upland springs to coastal estuaries. The river plays a vital role in regional water supply, notably feeding Lake Corpus Christi, and empties into Nueces Bay near Corpus Christi, contributing to the productivity of the Texas Gulf Coast.
