The Hennepin Canal in Illinois has been transformed into a popular recreational and nature area along the former navigation canal. Now managed as Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park, it offers more than 150 miles of trails for diverse outdoor activities. Visitors especially enjoy cycling and mountain biking on the mostly gravel or chip-sealed towpath, hiking and leisurely walks in peaceful surroundings, fishing at numerous bridges and locks (including bass, crappie, bluegill), kayaking and canoeing on the calm waters, as well as picnicking at many day-use areas. Seasonal attractions include horseback riding (April–October), camping (primitive sites at selected locks), and in winter snowmobiling or cross-country skiing on the state's longest designated snowmobile trail. The canal combines historic charm with relaxed outdoor leisure in a scenic landscape.
