The South Skunk River in Iowa, particularly in the Story County area and beyond, is a popular destination for a wide range of outdoor recreational activities. As an officially designated State Water Trail (since 2020), the river offers about 33 miles of paddling opportunities between Story City and Cambridge, with numerous access points and ideal conditions for canoeing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. The route winds through varied landscapes featuring meadows, wooded sections, and agricultural fields. Artificially created rock riffles (e.g., at Story City, Soper’s Mill, and River Valley Park) provide exciting, faster-flowing passages that especially challenge experienced paddlers, while calmer stretches are well-suited for beginners and leisurely trips. Canoes, kayaks, and SUPs can be rented locally, including through ISU Outdoor Recreation Services and other providers. The volunteer group Skunk River Paddlers helps maintain the trail and offers regular information as well as group outings. In addition to paddling, the South Skunk River is especially attractive for fishing. Common catches include channel catfish, flathead catfish, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, and various sunfish species. Many shoreline areas with fallen trees and structures create excellent fish habitat, making stream fishing particularly popular at access points like Soper’s Mill.Other recreational opportunities include hiking and walking along the banks or on connected paths of the Skunk River Greenbelt, picnicking at access sites, and – in some locations – primitive camping. The river is also excellent for wildlife watching, as it provides habitat for birds, mammals, and diverse aquatic life. It is important, however, to monitor changing water levels, exercise caution after heavy rains, and always wear a life jacket.
