The Pine River in Richland County, Wisconsin, is a picturesque, tranquil river that flows through the rolling hills of the Driftless Region and is especially popular for relaxed recreational activities on and around the water. Canoeing and kayaking are particularly favored: the river doesn't offer rapid whitewater, but rather a gentle course with numerous put-in points (including in Rockbridge, Richland Center, and along various county roads), making it ideal for beginners, families, and anyone who wants to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace. Paddlers glide through diverse landscapes—past impressive sandstone and limestone cliffs, under natural rock arches, and along meadows, fields, and wooded banks. Wildlife such as birds (herons, cranes, ducks), beavers, turtles, or muskrat can often be observed. The northern section near Rockbridge is considered particularly attractive with deep pools and excellent conditions for trout fishing (Class II trout stream), while the section around Richland Center is calmer and wider – perfect for relaxed paddling, practicing, or for a different view of the city.
