The Baraboo River in Wisconsin is a popular destination for a wide range of recreational activities, especially on and along the water. As the longest free-flowing river in the United States restored through dam removal, it offers long stretches of gentle, mostly calm current with occasional mild rapids – ideal for paddlers of all skill levels. Canoeing and kayaking take center stage: Numerous sections, such as between North Freedom and Baraboo or further downstream, wind through picturesque landscapes with wooded banks, sandbars, rock formations, and stunning views of the Baraboo Bluffs. Many visitors use local outfitters for canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard rentals, often including shuttle services for relaxed day trips.Tubing (floating downstream in inner tubes) is also very popular during warm weather, especially on the slower-moving stretches. Anglers enjoy a revitalized fishery with species such as smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, crappie, bluegill, and catfish – perfect for shore fishing or casting from a boat. Away from the water, the Riverwalk in the city of Baraboo as well as various riverside paths and parks invite visitors to stroll, jog, picnic, and observe nature. The diverse birdlife – from herons and geese to bald eagles – turns every outing into a special nature experience. The Baraboo River perfectly combines relaxation, mild excitement, and the scenic beauty of central Wisconsin.
