The Middle Fork Whitewater River in Minnesota is a small, exceptionally scenic tributary of the Whitewater River system in southeastern Minnesota (Driftless Area). It flows through hilly terrain and the heart of Whitewater State Park before joining the North Fork at Elba to form the main stem of the Whitewater River. The river is characterized by its narrow, intimate size, surrounded by tall, attractive hills, steep bluffs, rocky outcrops, and a largely natural, undeveloped corridor. For recreational activities, the Middle Fork is primarily known as a premier trout fishing destination. As a designated cold-water trout stream, it attracts fly fishermen seeking brook, brown, and rainbow trout in a peaceful, clear-water setting. Sections within and near Whitewater State Park offer excellent year-round fishing opportunities (subject to regulations), making it a favorite for anglers who prefer quiet, uncrowded waters over busier rivers.Paddling activities such as kayaking, canoeing, or tubing are very limited and generally not recommended on the Middle Fork itself. The stream is typically too narrow, shallow, obstructed by downed trees, strainers, and vegetation for safe or enjoyable navigation except during rare high-water events, when it becomes briefly more challenging but also hazardous. Most paddlers focus instead on the main Whitewater River downstream from Elba, which—while still demanding (frequent portages, log jams)—offers a more viable route. The Middle Fork therefore remains mainly a fishing stream, a place for nature observation, hiking along the banks, photography, and enjoying the dramatic Driftless landscape in a serene atmosphere.
