The South Fork Zumbro River is an approximately 58-mile-long (93 km) tributary of the Zumbro River system in southeastern Minnesota (USA). It rises about 2 miles east of Hayfield in southern Dodge County, flows generally eastward through Olmsted County—turning northward at Rochester—before entering southwestern Wabasha County and joining the Middle Fork in Lake Zumbro (a reservoir formed by a dam on the Zumbro River). Through Rochester, its course has been channelized for flood control.Recreational activities are the primary draw: The most popular paddling section runs north of Rochester to Lake Zumbro (e.g., from 90th Street NW to Zumbro River County Park). This stretch is accessible, beginner-friendly, and scenic within the Driftless Area. The river here is typically shallow, sandy, calm, and gentle—perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and even tubing (ideal around 3 feet of water). Public access points include a put-in near the abandoned footbridge at 90th Street NW and a well-maintained take-out at Lake Zumbro County Park, featuring a convenient new canoe/kayak dock with rollers. The route winds through mostly undeveloped wilderness-like surroundings with abundant wildlife (birds, fish), gravel bars, sandy beaches, and a true escape feel despite proximity to the city. The paddle concludes on the peaceful waters of Lake Zumbro itself. The river also attracts anglers who fish from canoes, kayaks, or the shore—common species include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, especially in the upper reaches and the reservoir. The landscape of rolling hills, woodlands, and occasional bluffs provides a relaxed, nature-focused experience. Local outfitters offer rentals, shuttles, and trip options. Note: Water levels vary significantly (often boosted by weekend dam releases from Rochester), and higher flows can create a lively current.
