The North Fork Zumbro River is an approximately 57-mile-long tributary of the Zumbro River in southeastern Minnesota (USA). It rises southeast of Faribault and flows eastward through Goodhue and Wabasha counties, passing towns such as Kenyon, Wanamingo, Zumbrota, and Mazeppa before joining the South Fork to form the main Zumbro River. The river is especially popular for outdoor recreational activities. Canoeing and kayaking are the main draws, particularly on the narrower, winding upper sections with a moderate gradient and occasional light riffles. The North Fork offers varied paddling routes through rural landscapes featuring woodlands, meadows, and some rocky formations – perfect for day trips or relaxed outings, though caution is advised for shallows during low water levels. Fishing is also highly regarded, with species including smallmouth bass, northern pike, various sunfish, and channel catfish present in the river. Restoration projects have improved fish habitats and created public fishing easements and access points. Other popular pastimes include tubing (on suitable sections), wildlife watching (e.g., eagles and other birds), and hiking along the shores in nearby natural areas such as the North Fork Zumbro Woods Scientific and Natural Area.
