The South Fork Eau Claire River is a strikingly scenic tributary of the Eau Claire River in west-central Wisconsin (USA), eventually flowing into the Chippewa River. It runs through largely untouched, heavily forested areas in Clark and Eau Claire Counties, offering a near-wilderness atmosphere with clear waters, dense woods, and varied natural features.Recreational activities are the main draw here: The river is especially popular among canoeists and kayakers, featuring everything from calm, quietwater sections to challenging whitewater passages (up to Class III). Particularly after spring snowmelt or following significant rainfall, water levels become ideal for varied paddling with boulder gardens, mild to moderate rapids, and stunning scenery. Many enjoy multi-day trips with overnight canoe camping on natural riverbanks, as the South Fork provides an incredible sense of remoteness and freedom – often accompanied only by the sounds of wildlife like otters or owls.In addition to paddling, the river and its surroundings are well-suited for fishing (especially trout and other freshwater species), hiking along the shores, wildlife observation, and immersive nature experiences in a peaceful, minimally developed setting. It is considered one of the most spectacular and adventurous stretches in this part of Wisconsin.
