The Jump River is a scenic, free-flowing river in north-central Wisconsin (mainly in Taylor and Rusk Counties), meandering through dense forests near the Chequamegon National Forest. It is considered one of the most pristine and undeveloped rivers in the region and offers excellent opportunities for outdoor recreational activities. The river is especially popular among canoeists and kayakers: It features an exciting mix of calm, peaceful sections and lively rapids (up to Class II), appealing to both beginners and experienced paddlers – particularly in spring with higher water levels. Several beautiful stretches, such as from CR M to Village Park or from Sheldon to Lake Holcombe, are highly regarded by paddlers. The Jump River is also an outstanding fishing destination with good populations of musky, walleye, smallmouth bass, and other species. In summer, natural swimming spots invite visitors to cool off. During cooler seasons, hikers, mountain bikers, and hunters enjoy the area, while in winter, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers take over. The river and its surroundings provide an authentic, tranquil nature experience far away from mass tourism.
