The South Fork of the Flambeau River is a scenic tributary of the Flambeau River in northern Wisconsin, USA. It originates at Round Lake in Price County and flows approximately 95 kilometers southwest through the Flambeau River State Forest, where it joins the Flambeau River. The river is characterized by its natural, unregulated flow – without dams – and offers a wild, scenic environment with dense pine and deciduous forests, open marshland, and numerous rapids. Recreational activities are a major draw, making the South Fork a highlight for adventure seekers. Canoeing and kayaking are particularly popular, especially for experienced paddlers: The section within the State Forest is considered challenging, featuring Class I to V whitewater rapids that are best navigated in the spring season or after heavy rainfall. Less frequented stretches promise tranquil, secluded experiences with opportunities for whitewater paddling. Anglers will find excellent conditions for muskellunge (musky), sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass, and panfish. Rustic campsites along the river invite overnight stays in the wilderness, complemented by activities such as hiking forest trails, hunting, wildlife viewing, or, in winter, snowmobiling in the surrounding Flambeau River State Forest. The South Fork of the Flambeau River thus offers an authentic nature experience away from the crowds, ideal for those seeking both challenge and serenity in the North American wilderness.
