The Yellow River is a picturesque tributary of the St. Croix River, approximately 114.07 km | 70.88 mi. long, located in northwestern Wisconsin, USA. It rises in the gently rolling forests and wetlands of Burnett County and meanders through a largely untouched landscape of mixed woodlands, marshes, and sandstone bluffs before flowing into the wild and scenic St. Croix River just south of Webster. The river is especially popular among canoeists and kayakers. The calm upper sections are perfect for relaxed family paddling trips, while the middle and lower reaches feature light rapids (Class I–II) and winding passages that thrill more experienced paddlers. In spring and fall, bald eagles and ospreys soar overhead, and in summer the clear pools are home to trout and smallmouth bass.Much of the riverbank remains in its natural state and is part of the Yellow River State Forest and Governor Knowles State Forest. Numerous pull-outs and primitive campsites line the water’s edge — ideal for multi-day paddling adventures or quiet evenings of fishing. Hiking and biking trails along the river offer additional beautiful views of beaver lodges, blooming wetlands, and, in autumn, brilliantly colored hardwood forests. In short, the Yellow River is a true hidden gem for anyone seeking peaceful, nature-focused recreation away from the crowds — perfect for paddling, fishing, camping, and simply unwinding in pristine wilderness.
