The Munster Blackwater, also known as An Abhainn Mhór ("the Great River"), is one of the most beautiful and diverse rivers in Ireland. It rises in the Mullaghareirk Mountains in County Kerry and flows approximately 169 kilometres eastward through Counties Cork and Waterford, passing picturesque towns such as Mallow, Fermoy, Lismore, and Cappoquin, before emptying into the Celtic Sea at Youghal. The wide, often tranquil river valley, with its lush meadows, dense woodlands, and historic castles, has earned it the nickname "Irish Rhine" and makes it an ideal destination for a wide range of recreational activities amid a stunning natural setting. The Blackwater is particularly renowned among anglers worldwide, as it is considered one of Ireland's premier salmon rivers. The fishing season for salmon and sea trout runs from February to September, featuring strong runs of spring fish and summer grilse. Numerous private and club-managed stretches (beats) offer excellent opportunities for fly fishing, spinning, or bait fishing in deep pools, runs, and glides. Experienced ghillies are often on hand to provide guidance and equipment. For water sports enthusiasts, the calmer sections of the river provide perfect conditions for kayaking and canoeing. Local operators such as Blackwater Kayaks & Canoes or Blackwater Boating rent out boats, organise guided tours, and offer courses – for example, on the popular route from Lismore to Cappoquin, where paddlers navigate gentle rapids while observing the abundant wildlife: leaping fish, herons, kingfishers, and occasionally even otters. Relaxed boat trips, such as those offered by Blackwater Eco Tours or excursions departing from Youghal, allow visitors to experience the river's landscape and history from the water, often combined with birdwatching in the protected estuary.Along the banks, numerous walking trails invite visitors to enjoy strolls or longer hikes, with impressive views of landmarks such as Lismore Castle or the surrounding hills. The Blackwater thus combines adventure, relaxation, and nature experiences in a unique way, making it a rewarding destination year-round for active holidaymakers in the green landscape of Munster.
