The Medomak River is a river in the U.S. state of Maine, approximately 64.61 km | 40.15 mi long. It rises in Liberty and flows south for 51 km to the tidal mouth at Waldoboro, then another 13 km to Bremen, where it empties into Muscongus Bay through the Hockomock Channel. The name "Medomak" comes from the Abenaki language and means "place of many alewives" (a type of fish). The drainage basin covers approximately 275 km² with lakes such as Medomak Pond and Kalers Pond. Historically, the river was the boundary between the Waldo and Pemaquid patents, and in the 19th century was a center for shipbuilding and mills, but their dams severely affected fish migrations such as those of the alewives. Today, efforts are being made to boost fish populations by improving fish passage. The river is calm, flows through rural areas and offers opportunities for fishing (e.g. trout, perch) and canoeing.
