The Elbe-Havel Canal (EHK) is a major federal waterway in Germany, stretching approximately 55 kilometers and connecting the Elbe River near Magdeburg with the Havel River at Lake Plau near Brandenburg. It begins as a continuation of the Mittelland Canal at kilometer 325.70 at the Hohenwarthe Lock and ends at kilometer 380.90. The canal was originally built in the 18th century as the Plauer and Ihle Canal and was modernized as part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 17 to meet the demands of modern shipping. Today, it is an important link for freight and recreational shipping, with a canal depth of 4 meters and a clearance of at least 5.25 meters after the expansion.
The EHK not only offers impressive engineering feats, such as the canal bridge over the Elbe, but also a charming setting with unobstructed views of the landscape, which has become more accessible thanks to the expansion. Tight curves were straightened, new lock chambers (e.g., Zerben and Wusterwitz) were built, and numerous moorings for pleasure boats were created to meet the growing demand for recreational boating. The canal also directly connects the Elbe River via the Niegripper and Pareyer connecting canals and is part of a larger waterway network that links the Rhine, Elbe, and Oder.
